Here are some links to the websites we referenced today in class:

World Population Clock – shows a real-time estimate of the world’s total population

The Breathing Earth – shows real-time estimates of where births and deaths are taking place

You can also take a look at everyone’s responses to the slideshow at the virtual wall.

TASK

You will examine and interpret the data presented in The Miniature Earth slideshow.  You will then use your knowledge of proportions to create your own version of The Miniature Earth for one nation from the 6th grade focus region – the Middle East.  Your findings should be presented in a slideshow format.

REQUIREMENTS

A.  Analysis of the Miniature Earth slideshow

  1. Respond to the slideshow by writing a comment on the virtual wall at http://www.wallwisher.com/wall/mshawkins.
  2. Perform related calculations using the Excel spreadsheet, which can be found on Google Docs at by clicking here.
  3. Extend the concept of a community of 100 people to the classroom & South Gate and perform related calculations.  Present the data on the Excel spreadsheet with graphs/charts.

B.  Creation of your own Miniature Nation slideshow

1.  Select a Middle Eastern nation to focus on.

2.  Decide on at least 6 pieces of data to research (for example, how many of the population are male; how many have a college education; how many live in poverty, etc.)

3.  Use the links provided at http://mshawkins.edublogs.org to conduct your research.  Be sure to make a note of all of the websites you use, as you will be required to include a bibliography in your slideshow.

2.  Create a slideshow (using Power Point) that shows demographic data for that nation in the same manner as The Miniature Earth by condensing the nation’s population to 100 people.  The final slide of your presentation must be a bibliography.

C.  Teamwork

You will work on this project in pairs.  Cooperation between partners will be graded based on a rubric to be provided.  Each partner must fulfill their responsibilities by completing the work assigned to them and participating fully.  Each partner will evaluate the quality of the teamwork at the end of the project.
